Big Hole National Battlefield and Bear Paw Battlefield
2007 Summer Speaker Series and Special Events The Summer Speakers Series at the Big Hole National Battlefield is held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Big Hole Battlefield Visitor Center and at the US Forest Service Campground at May Creek. Presentations are typically given at Noon and 3pm on Saturday and at 8pm at May Creek on Saturday evenings. An additional presentation is given at noon on Sundays. The Big Hole National Battlefield is located in south west Montana on Montana Highway 43 just 10 miles west of Wisdom MT. June Speakers 9-10 Steve Morehouse - Lewis and Clark in Montana. Will bring an 18 foot dug out canoe. 16-17 Bob Brown - Executive Director of the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. Dr. Brown gives a first person presentation as Major Rawn the commander of Fort Missoula during 1877. 23-24 Lee Bourgeau Nez Perce administrator and lawyer for the Nez Perce Tribe. Lee is a traditional gatherer and gives a talk on the Plants and Roots of the Nez Perce Tribe. July Speakers June 30 July 1 To be announced 7-8 To be announced 14-15 To be announced 21-22 Gene Hickman - The art of sign language used by the fur traders to communicate with their native counterparts. 28-2 Josiah Pinkham Nez Perce ethnographer in the Nez Perce Tribal Cultural Resource Program. Josiah talks about Nez Perce Culture and language both past and present. He will bring original and replica Nez Perce cultural objects. August Speakers 4-5 John Barrows - The Telegraph’s Role in the Nez Perce War. With original telegraph equipment of the 19th Century. 11 Big Hole Battlefield Annual Commemoration - Nez Perce Veterans will conduct ceremonies to commemorate the people who died on the Battlefield on August 9, 1877. 10 am to 2 pm. 18-19 Rob Collier Nez Perce descendent, shares stories handed down by the Indian people who helped Lewis and Clark, through out the Bitterroot Valley 25-26 To be announced October Special Events The Bear Paw Battlefield is located in north west Montana on US Highway 2 just 15 miles south of Chinook, MT. October 6 Bear Paw Battlefield Annual Commemoration - Nez Perce Veterans will conduct ceremonies to commemorate the people who died on the Battlefield September 30 October 5, 1877.
