The Big Hole River falls more that 1650 feet in elevation from its source in the south end of the valley. The river is the outlet for some 149 lakes. Miner, Twin, Mussigbrod, Van Houten and Pintlar lakes are accessible by ordinary vehicles. The US Forest Service maintains campgrounds at each of these lakes. Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest land surrounds much of the valley. These lands are accessible by 2 and 4-wheel drive vehicle, motorbike, ATV, horse, mountain bike and by foot.
